ULM Track and Field Wins 16 Events in Warhawk Classic

 MONROE, La. – The ULM track and field team claimed 16 event victories on Saturday (April 24) as it hosted the Warhawk Classic at Brown Stadium and Groseclose Track. The Warhawks earned eight field event victories, five individual running event wins and three relay crowns during the competition.

Junior Lakeitha Elmore claimed a pair of event victories, winning both the women’s hammer throw and shot put competitions. Elmore earned the hammer throw crown with a toss of 50.58m, a season-best effort. Elmore’s shot put victory came with a throw of 14.70m. 

Junior Taylor Hill won the high jump, clearing a top height of 1.62m, freshman Chasity Hay also cleared 1.62m, a season-best for Hay, but Hill earned the event victory by virtue of the tiebreaker. Hay went on to win the long jump crown with a leap of 5.56m, a season-best by two-tenths of a meter. Junior Jerrica Thomas claimed second in the long jump with a leap of 5.47m. 

Thomas earned an event victory in the women’s triple jump. Thomas leaped 11.81m to win the triple jump by just 0.02 meters over freshman teammate Alexis Smith. Sophomore Josh Howard finished a sweep of the triple jump events for ULM with a victory in the men’s competition. Howard reached 14.98m with his best effort of the day; it was also a season-best leap for Howard. 

The Warhawks also swept the javelin events as junior Marcie Richard claimed the women’s crown and junior Kyle Kent earned top honors in the men’s event. Richard’s best throw of 42.29m earned the women’s event while Kent used a throw of 62.86m as all the competitors battled against significant wind conditions. 

In the women’s 4x100-meter relay, freshman Kamry Vance, junior Victoria Floyd, freshman Mariko Beverly and freshman Jacobi Wilson won the women’s event in a time of 47.24 seconds, a season-best for the Warhawks. Wilson and Floyd each also won an individual event during the day. Wilson claimed the 400-meter dash in a time of 56.72, a season-best time, and Floyd clocked in with a time of 12.28 seconds to take top honors in the 100-meter dash, also a season-best. 

Junior Moses Chelimo won the men’s 1,500-meter run. Chelimo was first across the line in a time of 4:02.21. Junior Jarvis Mansfield earned top honors in the men’s 110-meter hurdles. Mansfield crossed the line with a time of 14.30 seconds, his top time of the season. Freshman Dimitri Hampton won the men’s 400-meter dash, claiming the crown in a time of 47.28 seconds. 

The Warhawks then won each of the 4x400-meter relays to finish the day. The women’s quartet of Beverly, junior Brittni Jenkins, freshman Jade Thomas and Vance took the top spot in their race with a time of 3:53.03, a season-best time for the Warhawks. On the men’s side, sophomore Keyon Jones, Hampton, freshman Chase Fulco and junior Joseph Gilyard claimed first with a time of 3:14.98, also a season-best. 

ULM will return to action on Wednesday (April 28) when it travels to the Cole-Lancon Twilight in Lafayette, La.
