April 17, 2010

BATON ROUGE - Junior distance runner Kadi Whisnant continued to make a habit of setting new school records, setting a new program standard for the third straight meet. Meanwhile, the Colonel quartet of Tiffany NallNaomi GreenAshley Carpenter and Samantha Calhoun joined Whisnant in record-breaking fashion by turning in a new school record in the 4x100 m relay to highlight a competitive day at the LSU Alumni Gold on Saturday.

"Kadi continues to have a great year," head coach Scott Williamson said. "She's really running well right now and could be big for us at the conference championships. The 4x100 team keeps improving. Their transitions are clean and their doing a good job of continuing to progress. All-in-all, this was about what we expected today. This is the time of year when your athletes are a little fatigued, but they competed hard. Now, we'll rest them up a little and get them ready for the conference championships in May (May 14-16 at Texas-Arlington)."

Whisnant, who set new school records in the 3K steeplechase in consecutive meets, had her eyes set on the school's 1500 m mark on Saturday. The Baton Rouge native clocked in a 4:36.31, just over five seconds ahead of teammateBrea Goodman's previous school record of 4:41.95 set on March 27 at this season's FSU Relays.

Whisnant's latest school record comes one week after setting a new school record in the 3K steeplechase. Whisnant earned Southland Conference Athlete of the Week honors with a time of 10:55.91, the fastest time in the league this season, and just 1.38 seconds away from being one of the top five times in the history of the Southland Conference. This came two weeks after breaking the 3K steeplechase record for the first time this season at the FSU Relays.

The Colonel 4x100 m relay team also delivered as Nall, Green, Carpenter and Calhoun clocked in at 46.25. The quartet finished just 0:00.01 under the previous school record, which they set last season at the Louisiana Classics.

Other notable performances on the day included Leslie Bourgeois taking second in the javelin with a throw of 44.34 m (145 ft. 6 in.) and Calhoun claiming third in the 100 m dash with a time of 12.01.

The Colonels will return to action on April 24 when they head to Houston for the Rice Twilight.
