Track and Field Competes at LSU Alumni Gold Meet

BATON ROUGE, La. – The ULM track and field team competed this weekend at the LSU Alumni Gold meet at the Bernie Moore Track Stadium. The Warhawks posted a number of top-10 finishes at the event, which featured five nationally-ranked schools. 

The quartet of junior Jarvis Mansfield, freshman Dimitri Hampton, junior Joseph Gilyard and sophomore Luther Ambrose ran the 4x100-meter relay in a time of 40.91 seconds, the eighth-best time of the day and the sixth-fastest by a collegiate team. The time was also the fastest by a ULM relay team since 1995. LSU posted the top collegiate time, finishing in 39.57 seconds. 

In the men’s 400-meter dash, Hampton claimed 10th overall, seventh among collegiate competitors. Hampton was third across the line in his heat, behind a pair of LSU runners, with a time of 47.42 seconds. Hampton’s time was the fastest recorded in the Sun Belt this season. Micheal Mathieu, representing the Bahamas, had the fastest time of the day, 45.56 seconds, while LSU’s Armanti Hayes was the top-collegiate performer with a time of 46.25. 

Junior Kyle Kent earned seventh-place in the men’s javelin with a top throw of 63.16m (207-3). Kent’s season-best effort came on his fifth of six throws on the day; it is also the second-best effort this season in the Sun Belt. Mississippi’s Colin Moleton threw 66.39m (217-10) to win the competition. 

In the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase, junior Moses Chelimo crossed the line with a season-best time of 9:37.78, taking fourth-place. Mississippi’s Barnabas Kirui took first in 8:43.72. 

Mansfield took sixth in the men’s 110-meter hurdles, clocking in with a time of 14.92 seconds. Mansfield’s time was the second-quickest heat number two; four total heats were run in the 110-meter hurdles. Billy Ray Walker of Louisiana Tech, also running in heat two, won the hurdles with a time of 14.44 seconds. 

Junior Lakeitha Elmore claimed sixth in the women’s shot put, recording a throw of 14.00m (45-11 1/4). Elmore’s only counting throw of the competition occurred on her second toss of the day. Aja Evans of Illinois threw 16.99m (55-9) to win the women’s shot put. 

Sophomore Derek Dark recorded a top shot put throw of 15.61m (51-2 3/4) to earn eighth-place. Dark’s best effort was made with his fourth attempt of the meet. Kemuel Morales earned first-place with a throw of 17.59m (57-8 1/2).

Freshman Clint Broussard claimed ninth overall, seventh among collegians, in the high jump, clearing 1.99m (6-6 1/4), a season-best height. Broussard made the height on his second attempt, Ricky Robertson of Mississippi cleared the highest height of the day, reaching 2.19m (7-2 1/4).

The ULM track and field team will be back in action next Saturday (April 24) when it hosts the ULM Warhawk Classic. The home meet, part of ULM’s Super Warhawk Weekend, will begin at 10:30 a.m. with the men’s hammer throw competition.
