Tigers Sixth, Lady Tigers Ninth at Cross Country SECs

Tigers Sixth, Lady Tigers Ninth at Cross Country SECs 10/30/04 Results FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Behind top-25 performances by senior Ruth Nanyinza and junior Patrick Gavin the Tigers finished sixth and the Lady Tigers were ninth at the SEC Cross Country Championships Saturday.

\"We did okay today, but finish-wise it wasn\'t what we were hoping for,\" said LSU cross country coach Mark Elliott.

The Tigers finished the day with 177 points. Host and fourth-ranked Arkansas won the men\'s title scoring just 23 points. No. 20 Florida (72) and Georgia (81) rounded out the top three.

In the women\'s race, 14th-ranked Tennessee captured the team title with 55 points, while No. 17 Arkansas (57) and No. 20 Georgia (63) finished in second and third, respectively. The Lady Tigers tallied 205 points.

\"All of these teams have either received votes or been ranked nationally at some point this season,\" said Elliott. \"It just goes to show the amount of depth in the conference. I don\'t think our position necessarily reflects the type of team we are.\"

Individually, the Tigers had nothing to be disappointed in as each runner posted a new PR for the 8K Agri Park course. Gavin led all Tigers finishing 22nd in 24:30.52. Seniors Sam Mwape (24:38.88) and Jimmy Wiggins (25:00.46) followed in 27th and 43rd, respectively. Sophomore Drew Haro and junior Roland LeBlanc rounded out the list of scorers for LSU with times of 25:15.39 and 25:26.85.

For the Lady Tigers, seniors Ruth Nanyinza and Katie Denton once again paced the squad. Nanyinza finished 21st with a time of 21:51.42 over the 6K course, while Denton placed 29th in 22:15.46. LSU\'s additional three scorers all finished within 15 seconds of each other as freshman Lindsay Day clocked 22:55.09, junior Michelle Hymel crossed the line in 23:05.57 and Jennifer Radecker finished in 23:06.57.

Both the Tigers and Lady Tigers will take next weekend off in order to prepare for the NCAA Regional Championships, Nov. 13, in Waco, Texas.
