Jones, Relay Squad Shatter School Records in Lafayette

LAFAYETTE, La. - Senior distance runner Lauren Jones led the way for the Colonels on Saturday, setting a new school record in the 3,000 m run. The Centerville, Iowa native clocked in at 10:26.75, nearly ten seconds better than her previous school record set last April, as the Nicholls State University women's track and field team wrapped up competition at the Louisiana Classics. Jones wasn't the only Colonel breaking records, however. The Colonel 4x400 m notched its own school record as Ashley Carpenter, Samantha Calhoun, Marion Chebet and Naomi Green combined to clock in at 3:51.89. The Colonels' third place finish bettered their old school record by nearly two full seconds. Nicholls clocked in at 3:53.32 at the prestigious Florida State Relays last season to set the previous school standard. Calhoun, a sophomore from Mrogan City, would continue to turn heads by taking first place in the 100 m dash. Calhoun continued to build on the momentum gained from a strong indoor season by finishing just 0:00.03 off the school record. The Morgan City native's time bettered all Southland Conference performances heading into the weekend.
