Elmore Wins Shot Put as Track and Field Competes at LSU

BATON ROUGE, La. – Junior Lakeitha Elmore took first-place in the women’s shot put as the ULM track and field team competed in the LSU Twilight on Friday (Feb. 19). The event was the final regular season indoor meet for the Warhawks.

Elmore recorded a top throw of 15.17m (49-9 1/4), 0.18 meters better than second-place Brieanna Kennedy of host LSU. Elmore made her winning throw on her sixth, and final, attempt of the competition. Elmore’s effort is the second-best throw in the Sun Belt this season. 

Elmore also claimed sixth-place in the weight throw with a toss of 15.69m (51-5 3/4). Elmore’s top weight throw came on her second attempt of the competition. Samia Stokes of LSU took first in the weight throw with a top toss of 18.02m (59-1 1/2).

In the men’s 3,000-meter run, junior Moses Chelimo earned fifth-place in a time of 9:01.51. Micah Tirop of South Alabama took first in the 3,000 meters in a time of 8:33.74.

Sophomore Derek Dark earned sixth in the men’s shot put, posting a top mark of 15.88m (52-1 1/4). Dark’s top mark of the day was achieved on his first throw, SE Louisiana’s Adonson Shallow claimed the top spot in the shot put, throwing 17.16m (56-3 3/4). Dark’s throw is the third-best this season in the Sun Belt. 

In the women’s one-mile run, freshman Madeleine Robertson took seventh-place, clocking in with a time of 5:20.89. Nicholls State’s Kadi Whisnant crossed the line first with a time of 5:09.58. 

Also earning a seventh-place finish was sophomore Luther Ambrose in the final of the men’s 60-meter dash. Ambrose ran the dash in 6.82 seconds, Richard Thompson, competing for Nike, won the event in a Field House-record time of 6.59 seconds. Ambrose qualified for the final with a time of 6.82 in the heats; he was the fifth-fastest qualifier. 

In the men’s triple jump, sophomore Josh Howard took 10th-place with the third-place leap in the Sun Belt this season. Howard jumped 14.67m (48-1 3/4) on his fourth of six jumps during the day. Lawrence Willis, representing the Tiger Olympians, won the triple jump with a mark of 16.56m (54-4). 

ULM will next compete at the Sun Belt Conference Indoor Championships, hosted by Middle Tennessee, in Murfreesboro, Tenn., the meet will take place on Saturday and Sunday, February 27-28.
