Two La. Athletes Make History At Great Southwest Classic!

ROY MORRIS JR. GETS SERIOUS AIR TIME ON HIS WAY TO WINNING LHSAA 4A STATE OUTDOOR LJ

Two North Louisiana athletes came away with gold medals--and made history--- today as they represented the state at the Great Southwest Classic in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

West Monroe freshman Jaxon Talley won the javelin early this morning with the throw of 199-9. This afternoon, Evangel's Roy Morris won the long jump with a leap of 23-9.5.

For Talley, it wasn't even close. He beat out Arizona's Darius Alberty by 19 feet.

In the long jump, it was a different story.

Morris, who was in sixth place after the prelims, won the competition on his final jump.

"The kid is a competitor," said Juan Plaza, the coach for Team Louisiana. "It was a very competitive field."

Both Talley and Morris made history. Talley is Team Louisiana's first-ever freshman to come away from the meet with a gold medal. Morris is Team Louisiana's first long jumper to win a gold medal.

C.E. Byrd sophomore Wyatt Ditt was close to a personal record in the 400m. Ditt finished with a 50.23, just shy of his season best of 50.19 at the Region 1-5A Meet. Ditt finished fifth in the competition.

For Talley, who finished as the LHSAA Class 5A state runner-up to Catholic's Paul Catalanatto, it was the best performance since April 4th at the Coach Jack Williams Relays, where he had a season best throw of 200-6.

Morris's jump of 23-9.5 was the exact same mark he jumped a month ago to win the LHSAA Class 4A State Outdoor championship.
