Track and Field Competes at LSU to Open Indoor Campaign

 BATON ROUGE, La. – The ULM track and field team began the 2010 indoor season on Friday (Jan. 22), competing in the LSU Purple Tiger Classic. Junior Moses Chelimo claimed the top finish by a Warhawk at the event, taking second in the men’s 3,000-meter run. 

Chelimo earned second-place in the men’s 3,000 meters with a time of 9:07.78. Chelimo led three Warhawks that claimed top-10 finishes in the event, sophomore Alex Wallace took seventh in 9:19.50 and senior Jorel Torres was eighth in 9:21.18. LSU’s Alan Sticker won the event, clocking in at 8:46.81. 

Sophomore Derek Dark claimed fourth in the shot put for ULM with a top throw of 15.69m (51-5 3/4), achieved on his sixth, and final, throw of the competition. Adonson Shallow of SE Louisiana claimed first in the shot put with a top effort of 17.06m (55-11 3/4). In the women’s shot put, junior Lakeitha Elmore earned seventh with a top throw of 13.25m (43-5 3/4). 

In the men’s 4x400-meter relay, the Warhawk quartet of sophomore Keyon Jones,junior  Joe Gilyard, freshman Chase Fulco and freshman Dimitri Hampton claimed fifth with a time of 3:23.69. Northwestern State won the event in a time of 3:16.75. 

Freshman Danielle O’Donnell finished in a tie for fifth-place in the women’s high jump. O’Donnell and Tulane’s Zandria DeBowles each cleared 1.60m (5-3). Ke’Airra Jones of Southern Miss took top honors, clearing 1.75m (5-8 3/4).

In the one-mile run, freshman Madeleine Robertson earned a seventh-place finish with a time of 5:26.01, Neisha-Bernard Thomas of Tiger Olympians won the mile run in 4:53.18. 

Sophomore Josh Howard finished seventh in the triple jump for ULM, leaping 14.67m (48-1 3/4) on his first jump of the meet. Lawrence Willis, representing the Tiger Olympians, earned the top spot in the triple jump at 16.54m (54-2 3/4).

Next weekend, the Warhawks will travel to Lubbock, Texas for the Texas Tech Open on Saturday, February 6
