2022 AAU FLASHBACK: LA's National Champions in the Sprints!

LEESVILLE TC'S GABRIELLE WRIGHT COMPETES IN THE '22 AAU JUNIOR OLYMPICS!

With the AAU Region 11 Junior Olympic Qualifier taking place in Hammond next week, we thought it would be a good time to look back on a few AAU Junior Olympic champions from last year.

  1. Rudyard West Jr. - This year, the West Monroe sprinter is running with the MADE Track Club. West won the 11-year old boys 100m in Greensboro, North Carolina last Summer with a time of 12.18.

  2.  Gabrielle Wright - Wright, who runs for the Leesville Track Club, won the 10-year old girls 400m with a time of 1:00.15. Wright was less than a second off of the meet record of 59.37 set by Tiana Welbon in 2019.

  3. Makeriah Harris - Last year, Harris did not run in the AAU Region 11 National Qualifier opting instead to qualify through the AAU Club Championships. Harris won the 15-16 girls 100 hurdles with a 13.82. Harris also finished second in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:00.12.

  4. Dekai Butler - The Butler did in the 200m hurdles, winning the boys 13-year-old division with a time of 26.91.

Louisian had a couple of sprinters who came up with runner-up performances  at the 2022 Junior Olympics.

Michael Mckenzie is a sprinter and hurdler for the South Baton Rouge Jaguars. Last year, he finished second in the 11-year-old boys 80m hurdles with a time of 13.15.

Yet another hurdler who performed well last Summer was Vederek Matthews. Matthews finished second in the 15-16 110m hurdles with a time of 14.52.
