RACE TO WATCH: Boys 60m Hurdles!

Last year, Scotlandville junior Broderick Davis lost twice to John Curtis' Justin Horne before winning the race that mattered--the LHSAA Division I Indoor 60m hurdle championship. Davis ran a personal record 8.00, which is tied at No. 8 in the US for all returners headed into the 2023 season.

Davis was motivated after the LSU Last Chance Qualifier earlier in the season, where his coaches believed meet officials missed a false start by Horne. Horne finished with a 7.93 in that race and is ranked No. 5 in the US among all returning hurdlers.

"Last year, I came into the season with high expectations," Davis said. "This year I feel like I have to repeat and win another state championship."

As for Horne, Davis knows that he brings out the best in him.

"There is not doubt he makes me better," Davis said. "I do not want to lose. I know that when he is beside me, I have to have a great race in order to beat him."

Two of the best hurdlers in the nation will begin another chapter in their rivalry this Saturday at the LSU Indoor Classic.

"I'm very motivated," Horne said, of heading into the indoor season. "Last year, at state, I worried too much about other people and didn't focus on attacking the hurdles and running my race. Going into this year, I know what I have to do to win."

"I'm definitely better at this time than I was last year," Horne said. "It feels like I never left with my rhythm and being in track shape."

But in reality, Horne did leave the track after competing in summer track and went to the football field where he helped to lead his John Curtis Patriots to an LHSAA Division I state football championship last month.

Davis and Horne could have some company at the finish line on Saturday.

While it's unknown if Catholic's Louis Rudge and Zachary's Cody Smith will be competing, what we do know is that both hurdlers have shown that they can run with Davis and Horne...and anyone else in the nation.

Smith, who is tied at US No. 23 among all returners with a best of 8.21 last year, did run in the  2022 LSU Indoor Classic . He finished third. Ahead of him were Horne and Davis.

Rudge (8.19), who finished third at the LHSAA Division I State Indoor Meet,  is tied at US No. 19 among all returners in the 60m hurdles.
