Makeriah Harris to get First Taste of Texas Relays Today!

SCOTLANDVILLE'S MAKERIAH HARRIS (5) AT THE 2022 LHSAA STATE INDOOR MEET

Everything is bigger in Texas, and, when you're talking high school track and field in the Lone Star State, there is nothing bigger than the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays.

The best girls 300 hurdler in the nation-and in the history of Louisiana track and field, Scotlandville sophomore Makeriah Harris, will get her first taste of the spectacle at Mike A. Myers Stadium today when she competes in the Division II prelims of the 100 hurdles at 1:30pm and then the 300 hurdles, which is scheduled for 6:25pm.

SCOTLANDVILLE'S MAKERIAH HARRIS WINS LHSAA STATE INDOOR 60 HURLES (8.60)

In the 100 hurdles, Harris (13.80) has the fastest time in Louisiana and is ranked US#4. She posted her fastest time in the prelims of the Texas Southern Relays last weekend. Katy Mayde Creek's Simone Ballard (13.56) won the Texas Southern Relays. Ballard is US#2.

The nation's fastest time in the girls 100 hurdles belongs to Niceville(FL)'s Skye Tolbert (13.53).

In the Texas Relays 100 hurdles, Harris will have the opportunity to avenge last weekend's loss to Ballard and run against the nation's fastest in Tolbert. While the prelims will be this afternoon, the finals are set for 2:10pm on Saturday.

Other Louisiana hurdlers scheduled to compete are Ruston's Bryanna Craig, Ouachita's Faith Lee and Tiffany Wiley.

What Harris has done in the 300 hurdles this years is nothing short of amazing. She opened with 43.16 at the Carver Classic. She followed that up with a 42.40 with the help of St. Louis junior Kenzie Touchet pushing her. At the Texas Southern Relays, Harris became the first female in Louisiana high school track and field history to break 42 seconds, winning with a time of 41.74.

If she can run that fast at the Texas Southern Relays, what will she be able to do just after rush hour in the shadows of I-35 undat the Friday night lights of the Texas Relays with two of the top eight girls in the nation pushing her?

Among those who look to give Harris a run for her money, will be Ballard and Allen's Sidney Green. Both Ballard and Green have run 42.87 and are tied at US#4 in the event.

The only other Louisiana athlete in the girls 300 hurdles will be Ouachita's Faith Lee.
