DeAnn Washington scores 18 points in SLC championship meet

NACOGDOCHES, TX – DeAnn  Washington was the only McNeese State performer to clock out a top three finish during the Southland Conference track and field championship on Sunday, the final day of the three day meet.


    The Cowgirl standout finished second in the women’s discus with a throw of 156-11.  It was an eight point effort for Washington who scored a total of 18 points in the meet having finished third in the shot put and fifth in the hammer on other days.


    The Cowgirls totaled 44 points and finished sixth in the meet – up from ninth place of last year.  Stephen F. Austin took the title with 174.5 points and was followed by Texas State with 135 1/2, UTA 125, Sam Houston State 99, TAM-Corpus Christi 95, McNeese, Northwestern State 43, Southeastern Louisiana 37, UTSA 31, Nicholls State 23 and Lamar 12.


    The Cowboys lead performer on the final day was David Rooney who ran fourth in the 1500 meters at 3:57.78 and was fifth in the 5000 meters at 15:06.37, giving him nine points in the meet.


    Rooney’s clocking in the 1500 meters was a personal best as well as the top time for a McNeese performer this season.


    The Cowboys scored only 23 points in the meet as a team and finished last, down from last year’s seventh place finish.  Southeastern Louisiana was the team champion with 140 points followed by UT Arlingotn with 139.5, Sam Houston State 118, UTSA 99.5, SFA 98.5, UTSA 73, Northwestern State 63.5, Lamar 33, TAM-Corpus Christi 30 and McNeese 23.


    Others earning points for the Cowgirls on Sunday were Brittney Kleckley with a fifth place in the pole vault, Emily Lewis with an eighth in the same event, Amy Guinn with a fifth in the 1500 meters and an eighth in the 5000 meters and D’Anna Lambert with a seventh place in the 800 meter run.


    Kleckley went 11-1 3/4 in the pole vault while Lewis cleared a personal season best of 10-8.


    Guinn ran a season best 4:45.20 in the 1500 meters  and posted an 18:28.23 in the 5000 meters.


    Lambert ran 2:17.63, her season best, in the 800 meters.


    On the men’s side,  the team of Torian Lindsey, Donovan Anderson, Ronald Stine and Charles Jackson ran 41.65 for an eighth place in the 4x100 meter relay.
