Davis does it Again

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. For the second time in as many outdoor seasons ULM track and field junior Heather Davis will be heading to the NCAA Meet after placing third in the high jump at the Mideast Regional in Fayetteville, Ark. on the final day of competition.

Davis established a new personal best and finished with the second highest jump in ULM outdoor history to punch her ticket to the NCAA Championships in Des Moines, Iowa starting June 11.

“I was really nervous about this meet coming in,” Davis said. “I’m happy with my performance though. It took until my third jump, but I was able to make it over the height. I’m happy to be going back to the NCAA’s.”

A consistent performer all season long, Davis has made a habit of placing near the top and will add the latest honor to a list that includes Sun Belt Conference 2008 Indoor and Outdoor Champion in the event. Her height of 5’11” trails the school record – set by Lauri Young at the 1985 NCAA Championships – by three inches.

Davis placed 19th overall in last season’s NCAA meet.

“Heather has always had this type of talent and the ability to clear the height,” ULM assistant coach Mark Winiarski said. “In the past she lacked consistency at times, but this year she has had it all. She is a great athlete and one we are proud of. Today was a great day for her.”

Davis will join ULM freshman Kyle Kent who qualified for the NCAA Championship Meet on Friday after winning - and establishing a personal best - in the javelin with a throw of 71.16 meters. Kent bested the field by just under nine feet on his first throw of the meet.

“Anytime you can send two individuals to the NCAA Tournament you have to be pleased with your showing,” ULM track and field head coach J.D. Malone said. “We are ecstatic with our performances this weekend and proud of the accomplishments of both Heather and Kyle.”
