Rew's unbeaten string snapped at Texas Relays

AUSTIN, Texas — The Northwestern State 4x400 meter relay team ran a season-best time Friday at the 81st Annual Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays, while Lady Demon shot putter Trecey Rew wasn’t the top collegiate finisher in her event for the first time in 2008.

Rew threw two feet behind her season’s best with a fourth-place 47-7. TCU’s Candis Kelley won at 49-8 1/4, an inch behind Rew’s school record set when she won the Southland Conference Indoors this year. Friday marked the first time any collegiate shot putter had topped her. She was second indoors at the Arkansas Razorback Invitational, but an unattached athlete bested her mark there.

The sophomore from Garland, Texas, had won at the NSU Relays, the Cowboy Relays and the LSU Tiger Relays to open the season. She will compete next Saturday at the Northwestern Invitational.

Lady Demon javelin thrower Dawn Comeaux was also fourth Friday in her specialty, recording a 141-8 mark as Texas A&M sophomore Hillary Pustka won with a 161-5 throw.

The NSU men’s 4x400 relay team ran a 3:14.65 time and missed qualifying for Saturday’s final by a second, taking 12th overall among 20 entries. The Demons outran SLC rivals Sam Houston State, Lamar and Texas-San Antonio.

The Demons’ 4x100 relay team ran a 41.58 and didn’t advance to the finals; likewise for the Lady Demons in the same event (48.32). Neither did NSU 110 meter hurdlers Chad Leath (14.46) or Mike Hill (14.81) advance. NSU sprinters didn’t move forward in the 100 meter dash heats, as Demon sprinters Brittain Valentine (10.98) and Charles Jackson (11.20) and Lady Demon sprinters Anna Forest (12.36) and Whitney Smith (12.40) finished well shy of the top nine advancing to the finals.

Competition continued late Friday evening with NSU’s Samuel Norton throwing in the B division of the men’s javelin and the Demons’ sprint medley team in action. The NSU men’s and women’s 4x200 meter relay units will compete Saturday in qualifying heats for finals later in the day.
