LAKE CHARLES - McNeese track and field head coach Brendon Gilroy has announced the signing of one of the top cross country runners in the state of Louisiana to add to his already successful program.
Jacob Daigle of Assumption High School signed a letter of intent with the Cowboys on Wednesday. Daigle is currently ranked No. 1 in Class 4A and No. 3 overall in the state of Louisiana in cross country according to Louisiana Running.
He was the Class 4A state champion in cross country in 2014 and the state champion in 2015 and 2015 in the 1,600-meter run. His personal best in a 3-mile cross country race is 15:01.80 while his best mile run is a 4:23.41.
"Jacob has the traits to be a major cog in the McNeese distance crew over the next several years," said Gilroy. "His blend of speed with the strength he has displayed over the cross country season this year is what I like to see. I feel his potential is untapped having only done moderate mileage the first few years in high school.
"We are excited to have him join the Cowboy family."
Daigle has also clocked personal bests in the 800 meters (1:59.07), 1600m indoor (4:29.14), and 1600m outdoor (4:22.27).
Gilroy is expecting to sign a couple more runners by the end of the week.
