Asumnu Named C-USA Indoor Track & Field Female Athlete of the Week

NEW ORLEANS - After a weekend in which she tied a track record, qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships in two events and turned in the second best time in the nation in the 60-meter dash, track and field senior Gloria Asumnu was named the Conference USA Track and Field Female Athlete of the Week for the week of Feb. 4-9, the league office announced Tuesday.

A native of Houston, Asumnu won the 60m at the Sykes-Sabock Challenge Cup with a time of 7.26 that automatically qualified her for the NCAA Indoor Championships and tied a track record at the Horace Ashenfelter Multi-Sport Facility on the campus of Penn State University. Her 60m finals time of 7.26 also registered as the second-best time in the nation so far in the 2008 season.

On the second day of competition, Asumnu won the 200m with a season-best time of 23.90 that is tops in C-USA and a provisional qualifying mark for the NCAA Championships. She also ran the second leg for the 4x400-meter relay team that finished second with a season-best time of 3:42.80, and helped lead Tulane to a fifth place finish at the meet.

Asumnu and the Green Wave will be in action Feb. 8-9 at the New Balance Collegiate Invite in New York, N.Y. All Tulane track and field news, interviews and meet results are available on the web at
