FAYETTEVILLE, AR - McNeese State made its 2008 indoor track and field debut here Friday with an outstanding showing in the Arkansas Invitational.

With only eight athletes competing, McNeese claimed two first places, two seconds and one third.

John Jamail led the way as he won the men's shot put with a toss of 52-2 and he placed second in the weight throw at 51-0 3/4.

Freshman Stephen Scullion won the unseeded men's 3,000 meter run with a clocking of 8:32.70 and rookie Amy Guinn took the women's unseeded 3,000 meter run in 10:31.93.

Also, Freddie Hannie finished third in the weight throw at 50-2 3/4, Darrick Brown placed 14th in the long jump at 21-10 3/4 and Michael Washington ran a 51.02 to finish 25th in the 400 meter dash.

"It was a very good start for us," head coach Brendon Gilroy said. "We had some good performances from the eight athletes that we took to the meet."

The Brown brothers had foul problems in the long jump. Marcus did not place.

"I know that on each one of their fouls, they were out about 25 feet," Gilroy said.

The Cowboys and Cowgirls will next be in action on January 19 in Baton Rouge at the LSU Invitational and Gilroy said that 40-45 Cowboys and Cowgirls will compete in that meet.
