EHS Round Table Run

The Episcopal High School Round Table Run run took place this morning at Highland Park. The Varsity races both were run before ten o'clock.

The girls varsity race went off at nine. Per usual, Malia Cali of St. Thomas Aquinas established herself as the leader just a few hundred meters into the race. She was racing without a team today as her teammates were participating in a race in Tennessee. Cali had a thirty seven second lead by the first mile. She passed through two miles in 11:28 and cruised home to win in an easy 18 flat. The race for second proved noteworthy and thrilling. Amber Abbot of Walker was the next closest runner to Cali through the first and second miles pushing impressive splits of her own in 6:13 and 12:52. Lurking close behind her though was Morgan Passman of Mount Carmel and Abby Terhaar of Episcopal-BR. These three should be use to seeing each other in races as Passman was second to Abbot's first at the MCA Invitational just a few weeks prior and Passman and Terhaar took second and third respectively at the LSU Invitational last weekend. Abbot was overcome in the third mile by Passman and Terhaar. Passman closed hard and finished the three mile course in 19:16, seventeen seconds faster than the last time she ran the three mile loop at the Bayou Boogie. Terhaar pushed for a third place finish with a great time of 19:25, a twenty-four second improvement. Plan to see these runners a lot in the future as Cali is just a sophomore and Passman and Terhaar are freshmen. Tenth place was twenty flat. Also, MCA won the team title with a score of 52 over second place St. Josephs who had 91 points.

On the boys side we saw a phenomenal race. Almost thirty runners broke the seventeen minute mark and seventy-five broke the eighteen minute mark. The pace was pushed hard from the get-go. The first few runners passed through the half mile in under 2:30. Leading the group was the Brother Martin crew which had most of its runners in the top ten. The pace at the mile wasn't much slower and the large pack of runners passed in under 5:10. During the second mile Walkers Paul Arthur made a move to the front of the pack and he along with Fountainbleau's Jeff Sanders and St. Paul's Luke Dessauer pressed through the middle of the course. Towards the start of the third mile Dessauer and Sanders began to break away and make the race for first a two man competition. Luke Dessauer through in a monster 5:01 last mile to break away from Sanders and take the win, finishing in 15:27. Sanders finished second in 15:39. Brother Martin finished strong with four runners in the top ten. They were led by Kenneth Schiffman. Tenth place finished in 16:31. For team scores Brother Martin took home the title with a low score of 34 over Catholic's 105. While not all members of Catholic's varsity team competed, Brother Martin's domination and pack running shows them to be the top team in the state right now. They're fifth scorer placed fourteenth and ran 16:37.
