Seven from NSU earn slots on All-Louisiana track and field squad

NATCHITOCHES – Seven Northwestern State competitors earned spots on the 2007 All-Louisiana Collegiate Track and Field Team compiled by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association, based on top marks this past season.

Sprinter Ravyn Hayward was NSU’s only event leader, with his 20.79 time in the 200 meter dash on April 21 topping all the men’s runners from the state colleges. The top three performances in each event were recognized as All-Louisiana marks.

Hayward was the only Northwestern athlete to earn dual honors. He also anchored the Demons’ 4x100 meter relay team of Jordan Patton, Jamel Jackson, Nathan Brown and Hayward, whose 40.18 time on May 6 was third best in the state behind LSU’s 38.85 at the NCAA Championships and Grambling’s 39.98 at the NCAA Mid-East Regionals.

Three-time All-American javelin thrower Cody Fillinich, fourth nationally at the NCAA meet, had only the third-best mark in the state this season. Two throwers who he topped at the national meet surpassed him earlier in the season. LSU’s Chad Radgowski led the All-Louisiana selections with a 239-8 throw at the Southeastern Conference championships while McNeese’s Chris Hill, the USA Juniors Champion, was second with a 238-10 mark in the NCAA preliminaries. Fillinich threw a school-record 237-2 on April 24 at Arkansas.

Lady Demon freshman Trecey Rew earned recognition with the state’s second-best women’s shot put mark, a 47-10 throw on March 31.

Rounding out NSU’s All-Louisiana list was Dawn Comeaux, the junior javelin thrower whose 154-2 mark on March 23 wound up second among the women competitors around the state.
