Hayward runs personal best in winning 60 meters at SLC indoor meet

HOUSTON – Northwestern State’s Ravyn Hayward became the first male athlete in NSU history to become a three-time Southland Conference champion in the same event when the won the 60 meter dash on the final day of the SLC Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Hayward ran a personal best 6.70 in the 60 meter dash, improving on his NCAA provisional time while running .03 seconds faster than he did a day before in the preliminary round.

He was joined by Lady Demon Shanae Steward, who won the women’s 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.48, as the only two winners for Northwestern State.

Texas-San Antonio won the overall men’s championship for the second straight year while Sam Houston State won the women’s title for the first time in school history. The Demons finished tied for ninth with 32 points while the Lady Demons placed seventh with 34.5 points.

Hayward also placed fifth in the 200 meters with a time of 22.11 and Steward placed sixth in the triple jump with a leap of 38-00 ¼.

Other scorers for the Demons had Charles Green placing fifth in the triple jump with a reach of 47-03 3/4 and Mike Hill (5th, 8.17) and Chad Leath (8th, 8.48) in the 60 meter hurdles.

On the women’s side, Deidra Truss placed third in the 400 meters with a time of 56.05 and tied for sixth in the 200 meter dash at 25.45.
