Tech Track and Field Wraps Up Tyson Invitational

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- The Louisiana Tech track and field squad finished the final day of the Tyson Invitational Saturday on the campus of the University of Arkansas after the nationally renowned women’s 4x400-relay team finished third place against the top two relay teams in the nation Friday night for the sixth best time in the country.

Seniors Nina Gilbert, Latonia Wilson, Krystal Cole and Miriam Barnes sprinted to a time of 3:35.73 in the invitation-only race that featured the top two teams in the country in South Carolina and LSU. Friday night’s events can be seen Sunday on ESPN2 at 11 a.m.

“It was a positive experience to run in one of the best indoor meets in the country,” Tech head track and field coach Gary Stanley said. “Our kids really did well. It was a great final tune-up to get ready for the WAC Championships in two weeks.”

Junior Cory Denstel had the highest finish of the day Saturday for Tech with a second place finish, personal best and currently top time in the WAC with a run of 1 minute, 54.02 seconds.

In the field, senior Jason Morgan improved his WAC standings in the men’s weight throw with a seventh place hurl for 61 feet, 07.75 inches for the conference’s currently fifth best mark.

In the women’s shot, junior Nadia Alexander continued her stellar indoor campaign with a collegiate sixth place finish after throwing for 51-7. Senior Shaterika Allen also had a great day making three throws over 50 feet, the best 50-5.50 for eighth place. The mark give her an NCAA provisional qualifying mark and gives her a solid position on the conference list.

“I am very pleased with the teams,” Stanley said. “They competed hard Friday night.”

Also notable was the WAC’s 2006 Outdoor Freshman of the Year Michael Coleman finishing fourth in the finals of the men’s 60 with a time of 6.75, which breaks the Tech school record.

Gilbert and Cole on the women’s side made a good showing in the women’s 400, taking tenth and eighteenth places with times of 54.41 and 55.52, respectively. Cole’s time is also a personal best.

Matthew Craig finished with a jump of 23 feet, 6.25 inches, in the men’s long jump for a sixth place finish, which puts him currently third in the WAC. In the 60-meter hurdles, John Kent finished with a time of 8.14, while Wendell Woods finished with a time of 8.19.

Tech will return to action Feb. 23 for the 2007 WAC Indoor Championships as the women seek the back-to-back-to-back titles.
