LSU HS QUALIFIER MEET SCHEDULE!

BURKS VS. BOULLION ROUND No. 1!

When you plan on your day Saturday, make sure you plan it around the Girls' 400m. If you are in the Carl Maddox Fieldhouse, make sure have your popcorn ready before the first heat goes.

In that race will be two of the best 400m runners in the nation. It just so happens that they are from the same city-Lake Charles, La.. Of course we are talking about Barbe's Kennedi Burks and St. Louis High Catholic's Hannah Boullion.

Burks opened her season last Saturday at the McNeese Indoor I where she broke her own meet record with a time of 55.77.

Bouillon had a Saturday off after turning in impressive performances in a couple of indoor meets in Texas, the first of which was the FasTrak High Indoor Challenge where Boullion ran 55.0 the fastest 400m ever run by a La. high school female.

That time may be hard to duplicate on the flat track at the Carl Maddox Fieldhouse, but one thing is for sure-the two bring out the best in each other. Since they will be different divisions at the LHSAA State Indoor Meet, it's important to soak in every opportunity we get to watch them compete against one another.

TOUGH ACT TO FOLLOW!

Tristen Harris's junior campaign was so successful that she has left herself a tough act to follow for her senior year at West Feliciana. When Harris competes in the girls long jump on Saturday at the LSU Qualifier she will be trying to break her own records. Harris holds both the meet record (19-11.5) and the composite fieldhouse record (20-5).

THE WRIGHT STUFF!

Phillip Wright III is set to open his senior year at Saturday's LSU High School Qualifier. The Destrehan senior, who signed with LSU Football in December, is Louisiana's No. 1 ranked returner in the 60m after running a 6.76 at the New Balance Indoor Nationals last March.

Going into Week No. 3, Holy Cross' Josh Brown "Turbo" Brown has the title of fastest high school athlete in Louisiana after winning the LSU High School Classic in Week No. 1. Brown's time was 6.87.

The meet record in the event was set two years ago when Captain Shreve's Marquez Stevenson ran a 6.85. Stevenson is now a starter in the secondary for Texas Tech. The composite fieldhouse record in the 60m was set by Warren Easton's Germain Smith-Mata who ran a 6.73 last year.

SUB 5:00 CLUB LOOKING FOR NEW MEMBERS!

Before last year, there was only one female runner in history who had run under 5:00 in the 1600m-St. Thomas Aquainas' Malia Cali.

The club added two members last year-St. Joseph's Elise Brown and Baton Rouge's Natalie Venkataraman

While Brown (Tulane) and Venkataraman (LSU) have moved on to the collegiate level, they have two former teammates who have the potential to join the club. St. Joseph senior Michelle Daigle will get her first crack at it on Saturday at the LSU High School Qualifier.

Daigle, who was recently named Louisiana's Gatorade Cross Country Player of the Year, opened her senior track season with a pair of wins at the LSU High School Classic. She won the 800m (2:20) and the 3200m (11:32).

Other runners on Sub 5:00 watch are Parkview Baptisti's Lucy Cramer and Baton Rouge High's Lucy Thomas. Cramer came into the season as Louisiana's No.1 returner in the event after running a 5:00 to win the LHSAA Divison 2 State Indoor Championship.

THAT'S A FACT, JACK!

Catholic's Jack Torrance has competed in two meets this season. In the first meet, he opened with a six-foot personal record of 54-7.50. Last week, Torrance threw the shot even further, winning the McNeese Indoor No. 1 with a throw of 56-3. That throw ranks him No. 6 all-time among junior boys in the MileSplit LA database.

Saturday at the LSU High School Qualifier, Torrance's main competition will be Central Lafourche senior Kaden Adams, who beat him by three inches in the opener.
