Tech Track Finishes Well at Bayou Bengal Invitational

BATON ROUGE, La. -- The Louisiana Tech track and field squad brought home four event winners along with a host of other good finishes at the Bayou Bengal Invitational Friday on the campus of LSU.

"We're ready to head to the Tyson Invitational Feb. 9 and reload," Tech head coach Gary Stanley said. "We continue to make progress and look forward to a national class meet in Fayetteville, Ark."

Junior Nadia Alexander had the highlight of the meet for Tech in the women's shot put with a school record tying throw of 52 feet, 3.75 inches for a first place finish, the eleventh best throw in the nation and an increased NCAA provisional qualifying mark for the NCAA Championships in March. The school record was originally held by Tech All-American Melissa Gibbons and was set in 2001. Senior Shaterika Allen took second place in the shot at 49-9.25.

The women's 4x400-relay team of senior Krystal Cole, senior and 2006 All-American Miriam Barnes, senior Sophia Jackson and sophomore El Charrita Reynolds took first with a time of 3 minutes, 51.27 seconds. Barnes was also able to take the collegiate first place finish in the women's 400 with a time of 56.86.

Senior Latonia Wilson made a good showing in the women's 60, an event she normally does not run, with a collegiate fourth place finish thanks to a time of 7.52 in the finals.

On the men's side, junior Cory Denstel won the men's 800 in his first indoor event as a Bulldog with a time of 1:56.82. Senior Jason Morgan finished second in the men's shot put with a throw of 54-10.75 and third in the weight throw at 56-6.
