COLLEGE STATION, Texas – In its first meet of the 2014 indoor season, the ULM track & field program got off to a strong start at the Texas A&M-Texas Invitational on Friday at Gilliam Indoor Track & Field Stadium at McFerrin Athletic Center.
The men racked up 26.50 points to finish 11th, while the women took 12th.
The Warhawks shined in the 3000m distance run as sophomore Dusan Makevic set a personal-record and finished top-5, clocking in at 8:23.87. Freshman Vinnie Van Puyvelde crossed the line him right behind him in sixth with an 8:28.01 time. The duo neared the ULM school record of 8:20.08 set in 2012 by Daniel Mutai.
ULM had a pair of finalists in the 60m hurdles as senior Martin Solomon sprinted for an 8.37 time and freshman Andre Phillips stopped the clock at 8.59. Sophomore Isaac Grieder set a personal-record in the preliminaries at 8.76.
Freshman Jeremy Harden reached the finals in the 60m and set his personal-record at 7.05 after finishing seventh.
With a third-place finish, sophomore Corey Wesley highlighted the jumping events with a 6.96m leap in the long jump. Freshman Jadarius Wright and Grieder also registered top-10 leaps in the event at 6.68m and 6.53m, respectively.
In the 400m, sophomore Nigel Cribbs posted a top-10 finish with a 49.19 time, while junior Jamel Sams finished close behind in 13th at 49.68.
The men closed it out in the shot put where freshman Alton Clay set his personal-record at 13.88m, which was good for sixth-place. Freshman Jevaughn Shaw and Grieder both etched top-10 throws of 13.03m and 12.92m, respectively.
On the women’s side, sophomore Rychlend-Martin Horne recorded a top-10 score in the high jump at 1.58m. In the shot put, freshman Alexis Gordon threw for 11.47m to finish 13th in her first-ever collegiate meet. Senior Jennifer Drew tossed 11.25m in the shot put and 13.56m in the weight throw.
ULM will be back in action on Thursday, Jan. 30 in Birmingham, Ala. at the KMS Invite.
