ULM WARHAWKS OFF TO GOOD START AT ULM INVITE

CALHOUN, La. - The Warhawk cross country teams took first place in both the men\'s and women\'s individual races on Friday at the ULM/Pine Hills Invitational in Calhoun, La. Junior Amanda Bartlett won the women\'s race and senior Maya Aden took first place for the men\'s team at the Pine Hills Golf Club.


The 2006 ULM Invitational was scored as a series of dual meets with the lowest score wining the match.


The Warhawk women\'s team defeated Centenary College by a score of 28-29, toppled Louisiana Tech, 28-30, but lost a close race to Northwestern State, 29-26. ULM defeated Arkansas Monticello and Mississippi College by forfeit.


Bartlett won the women\'s two-mile race with a time of 11 minutes and 58 seconds. The overall top finish was the second of her career. Bartlett also took top honors at the Louisiana Tech Invitational in 2005.


\"It was a good start for the team,\" said Bartlett. \"We have a lot of potential this year. This really shows us where we are as a team. I am looking forward to an exciting year.\"


In addition to Bartlett\'s victory, two other Warhawks finished in the top ten. Junior Amy Harris finished third (12:29) and junior Chardonnay Denman finished 10th (13:35). Sophomores Kathleen Gancayco and Dominique McAdoo finished 27th (17:08) and 31st (18:32), respectively. Senior Brynna Stanley rounded out the top six finishers for ULM in 32nd place (18:36).


The men\'s team finished the meet undefeated with four victories. The Warhawks defeated Centenary (26-31), Arkansas-Monticello (21-36), and Northwestern State (20-36). ULM also earned a victory of Mississippi College due to forfeit.


Senior Maya Aden finished first in the men\'s race, a four-mile, two-lap run around the golf course, in a time of 20:53.


\"It feels good to win this race in my senior year,\" said Aden. \"The team is in great shape. We have a new logo, a new start, and we expect to do big things this year.\"


Fellow senior Matt Brophy finished in second place for the Warhawks with a mark of 21:46. Senior Nathan Hall and freshman Seth Hall placed eighth (23:24) and ninth (23:42), respectively. Freshman Ennocent Ekara finished 22nd (26:26) and sophomore Mychal Word finished 25th (27:00).


\"I am pleased with what our teams accomplished by claiming the top two spots today,\" said cross country coach Toby Reep. \"We looked good out there. We have got a lot to look forward to if we can continue to put forth this level of effort. This was a good start and we will try to build on it in our next few meets.\"


The Warhawks cross country teams will be back in action Friday, Sept. 15 at the Ragin\' Cajun Invitational in Lafayette, La.
