Warhawks Claim Four Event Wins at Louisiana-Lafayette

LAFAYETTE, La. – The ULM track and field team earned victories in four events on Saturday (March 20) at the Louisiana-Lafayette Classic. Sophomore Luther Ambrose won the men’s 100-meter dash, sophomore Derek Dark won the men’s shot put, junior Taylor Hill won the women’s high jump and the Warhawks also claimed victory in the men’s 4x100-meter relay.

In the 100-meter dash, Ambrose dominated the field, winning by nearly two-tenths of a second. Ambrose clocked in with a time of 10.35 seconds, easily pacing the field. LSU’s Jonathan Johnson was second in 10.54. Ambrose was also a pair of ULM’s victorious 4x100-meter relay team. Junior Jarvis Mansfield, freshman Dimitri Hampton and junior Joseph Gilyard joined Ambrose on the winning relay that posted a time of 41.13 seconds, a tenth faster than second-place Northwestern State (41.23). 

Dark was victorious in the shot put by a nearly a half-meter over second-place Thomas Canchola of McNeese State. Dark posted a best throw of 16.24m (53-3 3/4) to claim top honors, Canchola’s second-place effort was 15.79m (51-9 3/4).

Hill led a one-two for the Warhawks in the women’s high jump. Hill and freshman Chasity Hay each cleared 1.62m (5-3 3/4) in the competition, but Hill earned the high jump crown by virtue of having fewer misses during the competition. 

In the women’s 100-meter hurdles, freshman Jade Thomas claimed second with a time of 14.96 seconds. Thomas trailed just South Alabama’s Latoria English, who finished in a time of 14.70 seconds; Thomas just edged third-place Lindsay Schwartz of South Alabama at the line (14.97). 

ULM claimed another second-place hurdle finish in the men’s 400-meter hurdles as freshman Chase Fulco was second across the line in 57.17 seconds. South Alabama’s Josh Jones finished first with a time of 56.44, two other Warhawks earned top-five finishes in the 400 hurdles. Freshman Brian Blackwell was third in 57.82 and sophomore DeRon Talley was fifth in 1:01.37. 

Sophomore Richard McKay recorded a second-place finish for the Warhawks in the men’s javelin. McKay’s top throw of the day went 64.82m (212-8), first-place was taken by Ben Chretien of McNeese State with a throw of 65.59m (215-2).

Another second-place performance was turned in by junior Lakeitha Elmore in the women’s shot put. Elmore posted a throw of 14.60m (47-11) to claim second-place, Northwestern State’s Trecey Rew took first with a toss of 15.74m (51-7 3/4). Elmore also finished third in the discus and fourth in the hammer throw. 

ULM also received top-three finishes from Mansfield in the 110-meter hurdles, junior Moses Chelimo in the 3,000-meter run, sophomore Josh Howard in the men’s triple jump, junior Jerrica Thomas in the women’s triple jump and the quartet of sophomore Keyon Jones, senior Andrew Opata, Gilyard and Hampton in the men’s 4x400-meter relay. 

Next weekend, the ULM track and field team will travel to the Alabama Relays. The four-day event begins on Thursday (March 25) and will continue through Sunday (March 28).
