Combs Wins Heptathlon

JONESBORO, Ark. – Isaac Combs claimed the conference championship in the heptathlon as the ULM track & field team wrapped up competition at the Sun Belt Conference Indoor Championships Sunday evening in Jonesboro, Ark.

The Warhawk men’s team finished third in the overall standings with 90 points while the women’s team came in seventh with 40.5 points. The ULM men had their best finish at the Indoor Conference Championships since they finished second in the Southland Conference in 1990.

“It went pretty awesome for the men’s team,” head coach JD Malone said. “Overall I’m very pleased with the effort from the kids. Our coaches did a super job getting the kids ready to compete.”

Combs scored a total of 5187 points in the heptathlon, which topped second-place Jordan Wehr of North Texas by 31 points. His victory was the third conference title of the weekend claimed by the Warhawks. Heather Davis (high jump) and Lakeitha Elmore (shot put) both won championships yesterday.

Also finishing well for ULM was Destiny Montemayor, who finished second in the weight throw with a toss of 57’ 7.” Mychal Word finished second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 48.36 seconds, which was just four thousandths of a second shy of a first-place finish. Aleesha Mullens also set a ULM record with 3143 points in the pentathlon.

Andrew Opata recorded a second-place finish in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:56.94. Jarvis Mansfield also recorded a top-five finish, as he came in third in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 7.62 seconds.

The Warhawks will be back in action next weekend as they compete at the LSU Invitational on Friday, which will be the last indoor meet before the NCAA Championships starting on March 13.
