NCAA qualifying 4x400 relay win for NSU at UTA

ARLINGTON, Texas — Northwestern State’s 4x400 meter relay team posted an NCAA Mideast Regional qualifying time while shaving five seconds off its season-best mark Saturday at the UTA Open track meet hosted by Texas-Arlington.

The Demons won with a 3:09.57 time to wrap up the meet, the final tuneup for NSU before next weekend’s Southland Conference Outdoor Championships at Huntsville, Texas, Friday through Sunday. The foursome of Chad Leath, Jamie Emery, Jeremy Thompson and Mike Green won by more than 10 seconds with the second-fastest time in the SLC this season.

“The last two legs, Jeremy and Mike were running by themselves,” said veteran Northwestern coach Leon Johnson. “We will have very good competition next Sunday at the conference meet so we’ll see what that can bring out of us.”

Lady Demon sophomore Trecey Rew notched another win in her specialty, the shot put. She has been the top collegiate finisher in that event in every competition this year, indoors and outdoors, save for the Texas Relays last month. She threw 45-7 Saturday to win and was third in the discus with a 139-2 throw.

Leath was runner-up in the 400 meter hurdles in 51.78 and was third overall, second among collegians, in the 110 meter hurdles in 14.64. Brittany Colotta gave the Lady Demons a third-place in the 400 hurdles (1:07.24).
