Loyola track team opens indoor season with four school marks

(Baton Rouge, La.) Loyola University New Orleans men’s and women’s track team started their 2014 campaign at the Maddox Field House on LSU’s campus for the LSU Twilight Invitational on Friday afternoon.

The Wolf Pack men added four new indoor records to the school annals. Freshman Christian Lynch set a new school mark in the 60m race as he edged out Claude Nelson’s achievement which was set at the same meet last year. Nelson’s time of 7.37 was bested when Lynch ran the dash in 7.28. Lynch almost had another school record in the 200m when his time of 23.99 fell just .05 second short of the time Piero Ramirez ran last year.

Carlos Flores topped his own personal mark for the shot put during the indoor season with a throw of 10.0 meters. Flores had previously set the school record during his freshman season of 2012 with a distance of 9.72.

The third record was established by Toren Arnold. Arnold is the first Wolf Pack runner to run an 800m race during the indoor season. He set the new mark at 2:03.46. Emma Larson did the same on the women’s side, establishing the 800m race mark at 2:35.10. She was barely able to beat out teammates Denise Powell (2:36.87) and Jessica Williams (2:42.80) for the honor.

Naja Cowan fell just .67 seconds short of Sarah Tortorich’s school record which was set at the LSU Twilight Invitational in 2010.

Kennedi Henneberger posted a mile time of 5:48.65. She was chasing, Annie Hills time of 5:27.1 set at the Stamford Invitational in 2013.

“We are blessed to have an opportunity to compete against some of the best in track and field. It was a good effort all-around. We now know where we stand as far as our conditioning and we will work to improve from here,” said head coach Andy Canegitta.

They will next compete on March 15th at the Southern Miss Outdoor Invitational in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.
