Nicholls Track Opens 2014 At McNeese State

THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University women's track and field team opens the new year with its second meet of the season in Lake Charles on Friday afternoon at McNeese State University.

The event gets underway at 11 a.m. at the McNeese Indoor Recreation Complex with the prelims and finals of the women's weight throw competition. The running events will begin at 4 p.m. with the 55-meter hurdles.

Although a month has passed since the Colonels last took to action, the squad shot out to a pretty impressive start at the ASU Kickoff Klassic in Jonesboro back in December.

Quadri Newson and newcomer Kierranika Duncan each had two top ten finishes on the day, while Jackie White in her senior season earned the highest finish with a second place effort in the 800-meter run, among others.

Newson finished fourth in the 200-meter run and seventh in the 55-meter dash events, as her times of 25.67 seconds and 7.95 seconds are currently seventh and 15th in the Southland Conference.

For Duncan, the freshman from Raceland, she earned fourth place in the women's triple jump, clearing 35 feet, 4.5 inches and now sits in third place all time with that feat, while placing sixth in the long jump with a leap of 16-10.75 which is also third in that category.

White's time of 2:17.30 at the Kickoff Klassic was good enough for a second place finish and places her third in the league heading into this weekend's competition.

Kryshell Rolle finished third in the 55-meter hurdles, as her time of 8.82 seconds is currently third in the league after just one meet. Cymone Hamilton had a monster toss of 40-2 in the women's shot put, placing third and moving her up to third all-time at Nicholls in the event.

Precious Semien finished third in the women's 600-meter run competition, clocking in at 1:43 50, while Terrian Gauff finished right behind in fourth in 1:53.81. Ashley Johnsonrounded out the top five finishers with a fourth place finish in the 400-meter dash, clocking a 58.91 time and is currently seventh in the conference.
