JACKSON BURNEY PULLS AWAY FROM THE PACK IN THE 2A STATE OUTDOOR 800m!
We're on Day Four of our series where we take a look at the most watched videos from the 2024 LHSAA State Outdoor Meet. Today, we look at Class 2A. If you missed a previous article in the series, you can check out the link at the bottom of this article.
CLASS 2A BOYS (800m)
Calvary's Jackson Burney made it three-straight 800m state championships by winning the Class 2A 800m in impressive fashion. Anyone who was watching Burney at Bernie Moore Stadium on Friday, May 3rd could tell from the jump that Burney had one thing on his mind-breaking the LHSAA Class 2A record of 1:54.32 set in 1989 by Jeanerette's Ronnie Lumpkin.
When he crossed the line and looked up at the big scoreboard there must of been a tremendous sense of accomplishment after he finished with a 1:53.23--beating the record by almost a full second.
It's tough breaking records, especially those which has stood the time the way that Lumpkin's record has.
With all eyes on Burney, some might have missed the outstanding performance turned in by Metairie Park Country Day's Mason Zink. The sophomore turned in a time of 1:58.88 to finish second. Ascension Episcopal's Quinton Foshee was third with a time of 1:59.34.
The gold medal in the 800m was not the only one for Burney. He anchored Calvary's state championship 4x400, which ran a time of 3:25.50. Other members of the team included Kolby Thomas, Tsehaye Knight, and Landon Sylvie.
CLASS 2A GIRLS (100m)
Menard's A'Shyria Burns had a dominating performance at the LHSAA Class 2A State Track & Field Championships. She came in with the fastest time in the field and she showed why as soon as the gun went off--beating the field to the first hurdle.
From there, she only extended her lead with outstanding hurdle mechanics, and finished with a 14.35--a season best performance--as she defended her state championship in the event from from 2023.
Burns' teammate--Cami Harrison finished second and Vidalia's Madison Jackson finished third.
It was performances like the one you see in this video which allowed Holy Savior Menard to capture yet another state track and field team championship. It marked the second state championship in a row as Mendard also won the LHSAA D2 State Indoor championship.
After winning the state championship in this race, Burns returned to the start where she won the 100m with a time of 12.18. She would also take home a couple of silver medals in the horizontal jumps. She jumped 17-6.75 in the long jump and 37-7.50 in the triple jump.
For her efforts, Burns was awarded the Meet's MVP Award.
