SEATTLE - Tulane's track and field program wrapped up their time at the UW Invitational on Saturday by competing in three events - including strong individual performances from Tiffanie Smith and Kayla Quincy in the 400 meter dash.
After a day in which sophomore Paige Callahan broke the school indoor record in the 5,000 meter race, her teammates put on impressive showings of their own.
"We are coming away from this meet feeling like we've definitely made some progress," stated Tulane track and field head coach Eric Peterson. "What we want to do is continue to improve and see how our athletes can continue to develop individually."
Smith - a senior from Houston, Texas - and Quincy - a freshman from Avondale, La. - put together two solid runs in the 400 meter dash after only taking part in the event once on the season. Smith, who finished fifth in the event on the day, broke her career high by finishing in 57.06 seconds. Quincy's time of 57.39 is also a new career high, and was good enough for seventh place today.
"Both of our 400 meter performers improved, and they've climbed higher on the performance list in Conference USA today," said Peterson.
Freshman Jessica Adamson turned in a time of 2:16.68 in her first time competing in the 800 meter race. Adamson, who has participated in the 400 meter dash and the 600 meter run once on the season, has never competed in the 800 meter race on any level.
"I certainly feel really good about Jessica's performance," added Peterson. "She finished the race very strong. She is very excited and enthusiastic about running another one."
"It was really great to see Candice St. Etienne back in the lineup," said Peterson.
Next week, Tulane will head to Albuquerque, N.M., to take part in the New Mexico Classic - hosted by the University of New Mexico. It will mark the second time on the season the Green Wave has participated in a meet in New Mexico, as they competed in Cherry and Silver Invitational last weekend.
