David Rooney placed 17th in the 5,000 meter run at the NCAA championship

DES MOINES, IA – McNeese State's David Rooney didn't have one of his better days on the track as he finished 17th in the 5,000 meter run during Friday's session of the NCAA championship meet.

The Cowboy record holder posted a 14:09.95 clocking which is 12 seconds off his school record 13:53.04.  He was the only athlete from the Southland Conference or the state to qualify for this event.

Cameron Levins of Southern Utah won the race with a 13:40.05 effort.

Rooney was attempting to join teammate Ben Chretien in producing team points for the Cowboys.  On Thursday Chretien had placed fifth in the javelin event with a school record 245-4 toss.

Chretien earned four points for his team for that performance.

McNeese had three participants in the NCAA championship meet which will conclude on Saturday.  On the opening day Cowgirl discus standout Ashlee Smith finished 11th in the event with a school record 176-8 performance.
