LAFAYETTE – Strong efforts by jumper Michelle Ogashi and the Southeastern Louisiana pole vaulters Saturday countered a mixed effort by the youthful program at the Louisiana Classics.
“Our upperclassmen really responded,” head coach Sean Brady said. “The pole vaulters, on both sides, were great.”
Brittany Pfantz (12-03.50) and her sister Ashley (11-03.75) finished first and second, respectively, in the women's pole vault and Kovey Simmons won the men's pole vault (16-08.75). Colleen Butler finished fifth in the women's pole vault (10-10.00).
Ogashi set a school record en route to winning the women's triple jump (42-06.25).
“Michelle now has the fifth best triple jump in the country,” Brady said. “It should be good enough to qualify her for the national championships.”
For the men, Shaq Windley and Henry Rop turned in key performances.
“Henry Rop ran really well for someone who hadn't run the 5k in eight months,” Brady said. “It was good to see him running the way he can.”
Rop finished second in the 5000-meter run (15:21.85) and Windley placed sixth in the 400-meter dash (48.31).
“Shaq Windley ran really well,” Brady said. “He set a personal best in the 400.”
Southeastern returns to action March 23 at the LSU Relays in Baton Rouge.
