RUSTON -- This year's signing season has been good for Louisiana Tech's Track and Field program.
Adding to Northwood High School's Kamelia Stroy's signing back in November, the Bulldogs have inked superstar thrower Larry Jones from Ruston High School to compete for Tech for the next four years.
"We are very pleased Jones chose to further his education and athletics career with us," assistant track and field coach Larry Carmichael said. "We have been watching him for several years. We're pleased he put his confidence in us for further development."
Jones, who is now a senior at Ruston, finished as the LHSAA 5A state champion in the discus throw in May 2005 as a junior. He also set a new 5A record with a throw of 186 feet and three inches.
"Jones demonstrated potential to be a major player on Division I throwing circuit here at Tech," Carmichael said. "One thing we like about him is he's a versatile thrower. He competes in all throwing events, which is very valuable to our team."
Jones was also able to compete in the 2005 USA Track and Field National Junior Olympics Championships in Indianapolis, Ind., where he won the championship in the discuss throw and finished runner up in the javelin.
"In order to have a complete team, we need to be competitive in both throwing and field events," Carmichael said. "We need firepower in the field as well, and he has potential to contribute a significant number of points."
