Breaking out of the shell

Not many people know about him. Not many people know his name. Not many people even know where his school is. Mardy Scales of Middle Tennessee State is looking to change all of that.

With the second-fastest time in the 60 meters at the Division I level, Scales will be one of the heavy favorites for the title at the NCAA Indoor Championships at Arkansas starting on March 14. He also looks to turn his luck around after experiencing some of the bad last season due to some injuries.

“It was hard for me not competing outdoors last season,” said Scales. “I am used to competing every week with most types of pain, but that hamstring pull set me back a lot. Since the pulling of my hamstring I have lifted weights to gain more strength and have gotten more flexible in my hamstring.”

Working even harder this season, Scales has made sure that he will be on top of his game once the indoor nationals roll around.

“I’ve been doing even more for the explosive part of my race,” Scales explained. “I’ve been lifting more weights including power cleans, box jumps, leg curls and leg presses.”

Looking ahead to the outdoor season is something Scales can’t ignore either. As one of the top relays in the country the past several years, Middle Tennessee State looks to prove once again they belong with the best.

“My teammates and I are very anxious to run fast again outdoors,” said Scales. “We are looking to redeem ourselves for last year, as we have brought in a lot of new talent to help out.”

Having goals doesn’t hurt either as it only builds upon confidence and a stronger belief in ones abilities. “I would like to at least run 10.10 seconds in the 100 meters and 20.3 in the 200 meters outdoors,” said Scales. With the amount of talent and capabilities in Scales, don’t be surprised if he can beyond his own expectations.

If you haven’t heard of Mardy Scales by now, don’t be surprised to hear his name once again very soon. Scales will next compete at the NCAA Indoor Championships set to take place in Arkansas from March 14-15.
