Cajuns Close Out Sun Belt Championships

The final day of the 2011 Sun Belt Outdoor Track & Field Championships were a success for the Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns men and women's track & field teams.  Jasmine Manuel won a title in the triple jump and three others garnered All-Conference honors on Sunday at Dean A. Hayes Track & Soccer Stadium in Murfreesboro, Tenn.

In total, Louisiana had two champions and nine overall All-Conference selections throughout the three-day event. The UL men finished seventh with 65.5 points, while the women finished eighth with 63.5 points.

Manuel swept the triple jump conference titles this season. The junior leapt 41-10 ½ (12.76m), narrowly missing her school record of 41-10 ¾ (12.77m) set at the Texas Relays.

In the hammer throw, the Cajuns had three individuals reach the top-10. Garrett Harkless broke his previous school record, throwing 190-2 (57.97m) breaking his previous mark of 180-11 set on April 24.

The Houma native finished second to earn All-Conference accolades. Jacob Fontenot (166-11, 50.87m) and Jacob Domingue (166-7, 50.77m) finished eighth and ninth respectively in the hammer.

Senior Jasmine Anderson earned All-Sun Belt in the 100-meter hurdles with her time of 13.38, finishing behind North Texas' Alysha Adams.

In the women's javelin throw, Jeri Ann Sills' throw of 140-9 (42.90m) was good enough to earn third overall and All-Conference distinction. Kirsten Meche was fifth for UL with a toss of 136-9 (41.68m).

O'Daylon Thibeaux finished fourth in the men's triple jump with his leap of 49-10 (15.19m).

The Ragin' Cajuns women's 4x400-meter relay team (Amanda Roberts, Tiffany Patrick, Petrona Layne and Jasmine Anderson) finished fourth with a time of 3:54.05.

Several of the Cajuns have marks that rank inside the top-48 and will qualify them for the NCAA Preliminary Round in Bloomington, Ind.

The regional will be held at the University of Indiana from Thursday May 26 to Saturday May 28. Official declarations will be announced by the NCAA on Thursday, May 19.
