Jeruto, Distance Medley Teams Lead Southeastern at LSU Tiger Relays

 BATON ROUGE – Southeastern Louisiana broke school records in both the men’s and women’s distance medley to highlight its two days at the LSU Tiger Outdoor Relays that wrapped up Saturday night at the Carl Maddox Field House. 

On the women’s side, the Southeastern team of Heather FitzhenryAlicia NoelBrittany Blackmon and Whitney Curry finished fourth with a time of 12:31.55. The men’s team of Seth CunninghamCameron Lawrence,Shaquille Brown and Reese Lee clocked a time of 10:16.20 to finish in third place. 

Naomi Jeruto also had a strong performance for the Lady Lions. Jeruto finished in second place in the 5,000 meters, covering the distance in 18:28.83. 

“We came into this meet pretty banged up, so we did well considering the number of injured athletes we held out,” Southeastern head coach Sean Brady commented. “We were very pleased with our efforts in the distance medley and Naomi was excellent in the 5,000. We gave several of our top athletes off this week, so we should be healthier heading into next week’s meet in Ruston.”

Blackmon, Curry, Fitzhenry and Jeruto also teamed for a fifth place finish in the 4x800 meter relay, finishing with a time of 9:48.27. In the women’s pole vault, Brittany Pfantz cleared 12 feet, 3.25 inches on the way to a fourth place finish for the Lions. 

In Friday’s men’s long jump competition, Johnel Reams posted a third-place finish, clearing 6 feet, eight inches (2.03 meters). In the B heat of the 1,500 meters, Paul Arthur posted a time of 4:21.05 – good for third place. 

Southeastern will be back in action on Saturday, when it competes in the Jim Mize Invitational in Ruston.
