HOUSTON – Meraiah Young won the women’s javelin throw and Charles Jackson finished second in the men’s 100 meters to highlight McNeese State’s performance at the Rice Relays Saturday in Houston.
Young didn’t get the season best she was hoping for but took top honors in her speciality with a throw of 141-8. Teammate Amanda Lejeune finished second at 125-5 and another teammate, Haley Carrier, was fourth at 115-11.
Jackson also didn’t produce his season best but he took runnerup honors in the men’s 100 meters with a 10.72 clocking.
One of the best times turned in by a McNeese performer was the 3:50.53 effort by David Rooney in the 1500 meters. It only placed fifth but that’s the best in the Southland Conference this season and is the sixth best ever by a Cowboy.
Also in that event, Joshua Sawe ran eighth with a 3:52.44 effort.
Others marking in the top five for the Cowboys were Chance Curlee with a third place in the javelin (182-2), a fourth by the 4 x100 relay team (41.18), a ffith by Torian Lindsey in the 400 meters (48.56) and a fifth by Napoleon Robicheaux in the triple jump (45-9 ¾).
Also in the top five for the Cowgirls were Ashlee Smith with a second in the discus (156-9), a second by Desarae Couthren in the 100 hurdles (14.80) and in the 400 hurdles (1:03.05) and a second by Amy Talbot in the 1500 meters (4:38.38).
Jarrett LeBlanc ran seventh for the Cowboys in the 5000 meters (14:55.79) and Parminder Singh was sixth in the high jump (6-6 ¾) while DeAnn Washington was eighth in the women’s shot put at 44-11 ½.
Andrea Myers made her season debut in the women’s high jump with a 5-3 effort and the 4x100 relay posted a 47.26 clocking for sixth place.
