Pace steps up Friday for NSU at Texas Relay

 AUSTIN, Texas -- The pace picks up dramatically Friday for the 22-competitor Northwestern State contingent at the 83rd Annual Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays track and field meet, headed by one of the nation's top throwers in junior Trecey Rew, who has two of eight NSU performances ranked among the country's top 40.

Rew competes Friday in the women's discus, where she ranks 13th nationally with her 2010 best of 164-1 last week. Saturday, she goes in her specialty, the shot put, with her season's best of 51-7 3/4 ranking 10th nationally.

The other individual entry for NSU Friday is P.J. Bennett in the men's 110 meter hurdles, with a 14.24 time currently 27th best in the nation. The Demons' 4x400 meter relay quartet of Michael Batts, Michael Green, Kendal Taylor and Justin Walker brings the nation's 21st ranked time, 3:10.90, into Friday competition.

Also running Friday will be the Lady Demons' 4x100 relay team with Amanda Freeman, Shamaigun VanBuren, Jessica Tuck and Anna Forest, looking to improve a 46.73 time that ranks 90th in the country. NSU has 15 marks that rank in the nation's top 100.

Running the women's 100 meter dash will be Angelica Kotun and Freeman. The Lady Demons' 4x400 relay of Constance Seibles, Carmen Wallace, Forest and Andrea Warren competes Friday, as does the sprint medley relay of Tuck, Seibles, Warren and either Forest or VanBuren.

Saturday, Joshua Commiato goes in the high jump where his 6-9 3/4 clearance currently ranks 30th nationally.

Thursday, the Demons ran 10th in the 4x800 relay with Jamie Emery, Nick Darby, Josh Crandell and Chris Lanier finishing in 8:04.09.

The other competition for NSU Thursday came in the women's 400 meter hurdles. Wallace ran a season's best 1:05.53 while Erin Knox finished in 1:07.57, but neither advanced out of preliminary heats.
