"This was a small meet, but a very good meet," Colonels head coach Agapius Amo said. "We expected three other teams to show up and at the last minute they cancelled. It is frustrating but I am pleased that Southern University took part in the event so that this could count as a duel meet. The great thing about this event is the course is open so the coaches can watch their runners during the entire race."
Jones (12:37) led the Colonels with her second place showing. She was followed by Kim Prestenbach in third (12:50), Anastasia Jones (13:14) in sixth, Naomi Quisenberry (14:12) in seventh, Charlotte Everhardt (15:22) in 11th and Jenny Willie (16:06) in 14th.
On the women's side the Nicholls State edged out Southern University 28 to 32 to take first place and win the event for the first time in school history. Erika Thomas of Southern University was the women's overall individual winner with a time of 12:21 in the two-mile race.
"I was very pleased with the way the women finished the race today," Amo said. "I told the runners before the race to treat this like a practice and to take it easy because we have to run on Monday. It just worked out that we were able to get three of the top five spots and capture a win."
In men's action Southern University cruised to a first place finish over Nicholls State, 24 to 52, after grabbing four of the top six spots. Darnell Parker of Southern University was the overall men's individual winner with a time of 15:37 in the three-mile race.
The top runner for Nicholls was Colin Campo, finishing fourth overall with a time of 15:56. Three spots behind Campo was Andre Ory in seventh with a time of 16:28. Rounding out the field for the Colonels were Peter Colina (16:55), who ran unattached, in 11th, Joshua Chauvin (17:27) in 12th, Robert Politz (17:44) in 13th, Alexandru Gasca-Silav (21:00) in 16th and Fabian Jefrance (23:00), who also ran unattached, in 17th.
The Colonels cross country teams will next hit the road on Monday, Oct. 18 to take part in the Pre-Southland Conference Invitational in Beaumont, Texas.
