Last year, Scotlandville made history by sweeping boys and girls state championships both indoors and outdoor. But that wasn't the only historic achievement for the Hornets. Later, Scotlandville girls' head coach Ursula Harris was named the 2024 USTFCCA National Coach Of The Year. It's only the second time a Louisiana coach has been bestowed with the honor.
Monday night, MileSplit LA state editor Jerry Byrd sat down with Coach Harris and boys' head coach Allen Whitaker to talk about last season and what fans can expect from the Hornets this season as they open up their season at LSU High School Classic.
Among the Hornets to watch will be senior Ferzell Shepard, who is one of the top returning horizontal jumpers in the nation. He is ranked No. 5 in the nation in both the long jump (24-0.25) and the triple jump (47-5). He is also the top returner in Louisiana in the 400m (49.60).
The Hornets also have strong hurdle group with Dylan Evans, the No. 4 returner in the 60m hurdles with a 2024 best of 8.80, and Fayden Brown, who is the No. 12 returner in Louisiana.
On the girls' side, the Hornets legendary talents Makeriah Harris and Sade Gray, but Coach Harris believes in the leadership abilities of Karlise Davison and Kanyria Cotton.
