SIMPLY THE BEST...The 2024 LSU High School Classic will feature two of the best athletes in the nation in Scotlandville's Makeriah Harris, who owns the fastest time in the nation in the 60m hurdles after her 8.50 season opener at the FasTrak Athletix Challenge Meet in Houston last month.
West Feliciana's Tristen Harris also comes into the Classic with a No. 1 ranking. The junior has the best mark in the nation after her performance at the North Texas Showcase where she had a jump of 20-

RECORDS ARE MADE TO BE BROKEN...We've identified some meet records which are in jeopardy
Girls 60m Hurdles - 8.57, Makeriah Harris (2023). She has already run faster this season. Much faster.
Girls 4x200 - 1:40.27 Dallas Gold Track Club (2006) This one is going to take a special effort, but well within the capabilities of the Scotlandville Lady Hornets if they avoid the traffic in the exchange zones. But then again, they should be well out in front after the second (Sade Gray) and third (Makeriah Harris) leg.
Girls Long Jump - 19-3.5 Shameka Louis (1999) No female long jumper in this century has broken the 20ft barrier at the LSU High School Classic. Could West Feliciana's Tristen Harris be the first? She jumped 20-0.5 at the North Texas Showcase last month.
Boys 60m - 6.86, Kemondrick Walter (2016). Warren Easton's Germain Smith-Mata has a history of taking a peek at the record book before getting on the starting line of 60m. The defending LHSAA D1 State Indoor Champion opened his senior year with a 6.77 at The Galleria Games last month.
OH, SO CLOSE...Keep an eye on Scotlandville's Broderick Davis in the long jump. He opened with a jump of 24-0 in Houston last month. The meet record is 24-7.75 by Sheddric Fields way back in 1992. Also, John Curtis' King Taylor in the 400m. Taylor ran sub 49 at The Gallaria Games. The meet record in the event 48.39 set by Chris Ward in 2007.
THERE IS AN EXCEPTION TO EVERY RULE...Sure, records are made to be broken, but..will anyone ever break Arnold Campbell's record of 68-6.50 in the shot put (1984). What about George Kersh in the 800m? He ran 1:50.56 in 1987. Will anyone ever do it better in the pole vault at the LSU High School Classic than Lafayette world recordholder Armand Duplantis' 18-5 in 2017? We don't think so, but we are hoping that a once-in-a-lifetime talent comes along and proves us wrong. It sure would be fun to cover.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR... Coaches and athletes alike are having to adjust this year to a new order of the event. We asked Mansfield head coach Mychal Word about how big of a change it has been as he prepares his runners. "It has changed a lot," Word said. "Now, I have to think where does the athlete best fit for the team especially with a small school. I'm always thinking about the recovery and overall health for all athletes. It's going to be very interesting to see how it plays out."
Word mentioned that there are pros (sprinters being fresh) and cons (400/800 tougher double.)
