MILESPLIT LA FUTURE STAR: Monroe's R.J. West Jr.!

RJ WEST JR. (4) SPRINTS DOWN THE TRACK IN THE 2022 AAU JO 100m PRELIMS!

Last year, Monroe's Rudyard West Jr. was the fastest 11-year olds in the nation. He proved as much by winning the AAU National Junior Olympics and winning the boys' 100m with a time of 12.18. West is this week's MileSplit LA Future Star.

West was just off the national record of 12.04 set by Walter Williams in 2004.

A year later, not much has changed.

We are entering the last few weeks of the summer track season, and once again-West is looking to add another national title to his impressive resume.

Specifically, West has a goal of winning the AAU Club Championships in Orlando, FL. The prelims are scheduled for Friday, July 14 at 9:30am. You can watch R.J. at the AAU Club Championships LIVE on Flosports.

When he is not winning national championships or training with his father and coach, Rud West, R.J., who will be in the sixth grade at J.S. Clark Magnet School, likes to play football and video games.

What does the youngster love the most about track and field?

"Winning and meeting new people from all over the nation," West said.

West did both at the AAU National Junior Olympics last year

"I won first place and was national champion in the 100m," West said of his 2022 national title. "I worked hard all year and set my primary goal."

When asked about coaches who have helped him get to this point in his career, West mentioned his father, Joe Byrd, Dee Dee Massey, Charles Tank Smith, and Tramaine Maloney.
