Raiders Sweep Parish Meet; Set Sights On District 1-4A!

HUNTINGTON'S STACEY PETTERWAY, TROQUEL EDEN, AND TERESA FOSTER HOLD STATE BANNER!

In his 11 years with the Huntington Raider track and field program, Coach LeRonn Burris has seen the program accomplish quite a few feats, but Wednesday's sweep of the Wesley-Payne Relays, which serves as the Caddo Parish Championship meet, was a first.

"I think it's a huge accomplishment," Burris said. "It shows the dedication of the coaching staff and athletes-especially since our track has been under construction the whole season."

There is no doubt the Raiders have overcome the adversity. Wednesday's sweep of the parish championship was not the first feather in the cap for the Raiders. The girls' 4x200 is still coming off a high from the Texas Relays at the end of March where the 4x200 team of Rondisia Williams, Demetria Harris, T'La Dewitt, and Aniyah Jackson won the event and set a meet record with a 1:39.22. The time also broke a 35-year school record.

Running for the Lady Raiders on the 1988 relay team were Letrese Johnson, Troquel Eden, Stacy Petterway, and Teresa Foster. Eden, Petterway, and Foster were honored at Huntington's Raider Relays last Saturday, where they were presented a banner by Harris.

At the Wesley-Payne Relays the boys were led by Preston Summage, who won the 200 (21.90) and 400 (50.18). The Raiders also picked up wins in the 4x200 (1:30.90) and 4x400 (3:37.94). In the field events, junior Quan'Travious Bradford gave the Raiders their only field event win with a 134-2 in the javelin.

The Lady Raiders finished first and second in three events- the 100m, 200m, and 100m hurdles.  Williams won both the 100m (12.57) and 200m (25.82). T'La Dewitt was right behind Williams in both races.

Harris and Catina Davenport gave the Lady Raiders 18 points by finishing one-two in the 100 hurdles. Harris ran a 14.83 while Davenport came through the line at 15.89.

Davenport and A'Jamea Lyles gave the Lady Raiders a couple of first place finishes in the field events. Davenport won the triple jump (32-10.50) and Lyles won the javelin (80-0).

The Raiders now turn their attention to the next week's District 1-4A Championships in Stonewall, La, where both the girls' and the boys' are looking to avenge last year's sweep by North DeSoto. The Lady Griffins beat Huntington 208-182. The margin of victory was wider on the boys' side where North DeSoto won 188-103.
