Which Boys' 5A District is Louisiana's Best on the Track?

HOLY CROSS' KROSSE JOHNSON WINS THE 2022 LHSAA CLASS 5A 100m

Let's face it. When it comes to high school track and field in LHSAA's Class 5A, most everyone thinks their district is the best. It becomes a friendly debate, especially this time of year-the championship season-when athletes and coaches scheme to get the most athletes qualified for the LHSAA State Outdoor Meet.

For the purposes of this article, we are going to objectively determine the best district in 5A as determined by the results by last year's state outdoor meet.

The method? Simply using the same scoring system used to determine the state championship team. Awarding ten points for first. Eight points for second...etc. However, we stopped at fifth place (two points.)

It's not even close in the distance events, where District 9-5A-thanks to the Jesuit machine scored 30 points. The closest district to 9-5A was District 1-5A with 16 points. These points came from Byrd's Trent Wells, who was the only runner to make the top five in both the 1600m and 3200m.

In third place in the distance category was District 4-5A with 14 points from Zachary's Rhen Langley in the 1600m and his teammate Lejaune George in the 800m.

What about the sprints? District 5-5A gets the nod here by placing at least two athletes in the top five in the 100m, 200m, 400m and one a piece in the 110m hurdles and 300 hurdles.

Woodlawn's J'marcus Sewell finished third in both the 100m and 200m. His teammate,  Jordan Matthews finished second in the 200m and fourth in the 100m. This gave District 5-5A 24 points alone.

District 5-5A had 12 points in the 400m with a second and fourth place finish.

Catholic's Louis Rudge added 18 points with a first place finish in the 300m hurdles and run

District 9-5A finished second in this category with 36 points, 20 coming from Krosse Johnson, the Holy Cross sprinter who won both the 100m and 200m as a sophomore.

The other points from District 9-5A came from John Curtis' Justin Horne, who scored 16 points by winning the 110m hurdles and finishing third in the 300m hurdles.

OVERALL...District 5-5A is the best 5A Distict on the track.

District 5-5A edges out District 9-5A on the track, 70-66. District 1-5A comes in third with 40 points. District 2-5 was fourth with 28 points. District 4-5A was fifth with 24 points.

But what about the field events? We will take a look at field events tomorrow.

One other note. District 6-5A, 7-5A, and 8-5A did not have one athlete to make the top five in any running event. District 3-5A has one athlete-Ovey Comeaux's Kalix Robinson, who finished fifth in the 300m hurdles-to make the top five.
