THE WOODLANDS, Texas - The Tulane men's cross country team placed eighth at the Conference USA Championship Saturday, while the Green Wave women finished 10th at Bear Branch Sportsfields in The Woodlands, Texas. Sophomore Julia Whitrock paced the Green Wave women in 20th to earn Third Team All-Conference USA honors, while sophomore Brian Lozes led the Tulane men in 42nd

"Julia set an individual goal to place among to top 20 in C-USA and accomplished that goal today to lead us for the second meet in a row," director of cross country Eric Peterson said. "She positioned herself well in the first mile and competed well throughout the entire race on a very wet and muddy course. She earned Third Team all-conference by being among the top 21 finishers and I'm very proud of her for this accomplishment."

Lozes turned in a time of 27:05 in the 8K men's race, finishing 42nd and improving by 27 seconds over his previous 8K time at Mississippi College two weeks ago.

Sophomore Max Miller finished 51st with a time of 28:33. Right behind Miller was sophomore Mike Mainguy, four seconds back with a season-best 8K time of 28:37. Freshman Jordan Vance turned in a 29:02 time to finish 55th, with sophomore Jordon Holtzman in 56th in 29:34. Freshman Phil Scruggs crossed the line in 30:26, to place 59th, while freshman Sam King finished 60th with a time of 32:08.

John Beattie of Tulsa won the men's competition in 24:23. UTEP won the team championship with a score of 31 by one point over Tulsa by placing four runners in the top eight and six in the top 12. Tulane's score of 236 was 26 behind seventh-place Memphis.

On the women's side, Whitrock turned in a season-best time of 19:07 in her second competition of the season. Annette Glaz posted a personal best time of 20:25, placing 53rd. Tulane's third runner over the line was sophomore Johanna Gretschel, who traversed the course in 20:48 to place 62nd. Hot on her heels was teammate Maggie Gentry, less than one second back in 63rd. Freshman Emmi Aguillard turned in a 21:18 time for a 71st place finish to round out Tulane's scoring.

Junior Peggy Keplinger was 81st in 22:16, while junior Rebecca Coady posted a mark of 22:43 for 84th. Junior Caitlin Hornbeck was 85th in 22:58 and sophomore Jessica Dallager rounded out Tulane's entries in 23:26 to place 87th.

With 254 points, the Green Wave finished 10th, 32 points back of ninth-place UCF and 67 ahead of 11th place. UTEP freshman Risper Kimaiyo earned Most Outstanding Runner and Freshman of the Year honors, winning the race in 17:46. SMU was the women's team champion, posing a score of 28.

"As for our team results for both men and women, we are not where we want to be," Peterson continued. "We have set high expectations to become an elite C-USA cross country program in the very near future. I appreciate the effort from our young team members. They are serious about their training and all are hard workers. As we move forward though, we need to continue to improve everyone's fitness level and teach them how to be more assertive and aggressive while competing."

The NCAA South Central Regional Championships will take place in two weeks, on November 14, in Waco, Texas.
