McNeese wins the Cowboy 5K Stampede

 McNeese State won both the men’s and the women’s division of the Cowboy Stampede on Saturday at the Enos Derbonne Complex.

            The Cowboys took the men’s title with four top five finishes and 23 points while the Cowgirls won the women’s title with three top three finishes and 17 points.

            More than 500 athletes took part in the meet that included races for high schools, middle schools and elementary schools.  Also, an open 5K run was held for all other participants.

            Amy Guinn produced an individual first place for McNeese, winning the women’s 5K run in 19:20.67.  She was followed across the finish line by teammates Fionnuala Ross who ran second (19:22.71) and Candice McCormick who ran third (19:29.96).

            Also in the top 10 for the Cowgirls were Carly Thurman in fifth place at 20:04.60, Aisling Casey in sixth at 20:10.04 and D’Anna Lambert in eighth place at 20:20.67.

            Southeastern Louisiana was second with 49 points and Louisiana College was third with 90 points.

            In the men’s 5K race, Samuel Kosgei, a former Lamar runner, took the individiual title with a clocking of 15:25.28.

            McNeese’s David Rooney was second at 15:43.08 and he was followed by teammates Jonathan Koenck in third at 15:57.75, Jarrett LeBlanc in fourth at 16:13.00 and Ryan Barrow in fifth at 16:44.07. Also in the top 10 for the Cowboys was Kevin Laughlin who placed ninth at 16:53.54.

            Lamar ran second in the team competition with 33 points while Southeastern Louisiana had 75, Southern (NO) 130 and Louisiana College 132.

            David Charpentier won the open 5K run with a 20:03.05 clocking and second place was taken by former Cowboy basketball player Todd Briley at 20:17.06.
