Amy Guinn and Alvy Carragher team up to win McNeese cross country relay race

McNeese State’s Amy Guinn and Alvy Carragher teamed up to win the McNeese cross country relay race at the Enos Derbonne recreation facility here Friday afternoon.

            The duo posted a composite time of 21:24 to take the women’s title by a mere second over runnersup Dorcas Kapkiai and Kim Gastinelli of Southeastern Louisiana.
           
The meet had originally been scheduled to be a four man relay with each member running one and one half miles. It had to be shortened to a two man race with each runner going 3,000 meters.
           
Southeastern did take the men’s title with Kalphy Kemboi and Henry Rop nosing out McNeese’s Joshua Sawe and Johnathan Koenck. The Lion duo ran 17:10 and the Cowboys posted a 17:18.
 
            “It was a real good start for us,” said McNeese coach Brendon Gilroy. “I thought that both the men and the women did exceptionally well. We had three teams finish in the top 10 in both divisions.”
           
In the women’s race, Guinn got her team going by running a 10:38 and then Carragher posted a 10:46 coming in. The latter put on a fierce burst of speed to hold off Gastinell at the finish line.
           
Also finishing in the top 10 for the Cowgirls were the teams of Fionnuala Ross and Candice McCormick and Carly Thurman and Aisling Casey. Ross and McCormick ran 21:33 for third place and Thurman and Casey posted a 22:30 for seventh place.
           
In the men’s race Sawe went out in 8:38 for the Cowboys and Koenck turned in an 8:40 as the duo took second place. Also for McNeese, David Rooney and Jarrett LeBlanc ran 17:59 for third place and Ryan Barrow and Kevin Laughlin posted an 18:31 for seventh place.
           
Northwestern State, UL Lafayette and Lamar also participated in the meet.
           
Leaders for the Demons were Josh Cradell and Cameron Mehl with a ninth place (18:49 in the men’s race and Lawana Perkins and Karensa Ellis with a fifth place (22:17) for the women.
           
Tops for Lamar were Randy Becker and Jose Leos with a fourth place in the men (18:16) and Taylor Cloy and Lora-Beth Saunders with a fourth place (21:57) in the women’s division.
           
And, the leaders for ULL were Zach France and Reese Lee with a fifth (18:18) in the men and Callie Picou and Katie Roland with a ninth place (23:19) for the women.
