Nacogdoches, TX – McNeese State’s men’s and women’s teams competed in the annual Southland Conference cross country championship meet on Monday but the results didn’t come out the way either team expected.
Injuries have hampered both squads this season and then some of the athletes were also bothered by a stomach virus the night before the race and during the race.
The Cowboys tied for seventh in the team standings while the Cowgirls placed ninth.
Jordan Neil, who was expected to be one of the Cowboy leaders, had to pull out midway through the race with a leg injury while Cowgirl leader Tinette Burger did not compete due to an earlier injury.
Cowgirl Amy Guinn, who placed 15th in the meet last year, also did not compete because of an illness and some of the others who did participate where slowed by the virus.
Freshman David Rooney led McNeese with a 10th place showing in the men’s race. He turned in a 25:40 clocking for the 8K race.
Toping the Cowgirls was Candice McCormick, also a rookie, with a 23:46 for 31st place in the women’s 6K run.
Lamar won the men’s championship while TAM-Corpus Christi took the women’s title. Lamar scored 29 points and was followed by SFA with 87 points, TAM-Corpus Christi with 129,UT Arlington 130, Sam Houston State 138, UTSA 145, McNeese and Texas State 151, Southeastern Louisiana 170, Central Arkansas 268, Northwestern State 294 and Nicholls State 359.
In the women’s totals, TAM-Corpus pulled in 49 points and was followed by SFA with 61, Texas State 95, UT Arlington 108, UTSA 152, Southeastern Louisiana 164, Lamar 176, Sam Houston State 191, McNeese 236, Central Arkansas 243, Nicholls State 255 and Northwestern State 357.
The individual champions were Samuel Kosgei of Lamar and Dana Mecke of UTSA. Kosgei ran 24:13 and won by 18 seconds while Mecke posted a 21:39 effort to win by eight seconds.
Other results for the Cowboys had Johnathan Koenck placing 19th with a 26:21 effort, Ryan Barrow finishing 37th at 27:15, Jarrett LeBlanc running 37th at 27:15, Stephen Scullion posting a 27:24 for 40th, Kenneth Pierce 27:36 for 46th place and Michael Dyer 27:54 for 49th.
For the Cowgirls, Christi Citizen ran 24:39 for 43rd place, Lyndsey Monteith finished 52nd at 25:06, Alvy Carragher ran 25:08 for 54th place, Cassie Wilbur was 61st at 25:38 , D’Anna Lambert ran 74th at 27:16 and Katarina Caraway was 75th at 27:25.
Next up for the Cowboys and the Cowgirls will be the NCAA regionals in two weeks.
